In the great majority of public health-related professions, including nursing, clinical/hospital care, public health, and medical research, the term "public health informatics" refers to the use of computers, clinical guidelines, communication, and information systems. As with public health in general, the majority of public health informatics work is done at the state and local levels, in the county or parish departments of health and the state departments of health. Among the tasks performed at a state health department are gathering and storing vital statistics (birth and death records), gathering reports of communicable disease cases from physicians, hospitals, and laboratories for infectious disease surveillance, displaying infectious disease statistics and trends and gathering child immunisation and lead screening information.
