Protecting the health of a population requires the efforts of public health professionals. These people look into, keep an eye on, deal with, and treat socially significant health issues. To achieve certain health-related objectives, they carry out activities including illness research and response, neighbourhood education and outreach, and injury prevention. The scope of public health initiatives varies. A state or national public health programme may concentrate on a mental health disease that disproportionately affects a given demographic group, while a community-based programme would aim to enhance diabetes care services in a town with high obesity rates.
