Information technology, especially that related to health, is referred to as "health information technology" (HIT). It facilitates the administration of health information across computerised systems and the safe interchange of health data between patients, healthcare professionals, payers, and quality monitors. The use of electronic health records (EHRs) was viewed as the most promising tool for enhancing the overall quality, safety, and efficiency of the health delivery system based on a 2008 report on a small series of studies carried out at four sites that offer ambulatory care - three U.S. medical centres and one in the Netherlands. Applications for prescribing were categorised as electronic medical records (EMR), clinical decision support (CDS), and computerised prescriptions in a 2008 research regarding the use of technology in the United States by Furukawa and colleagues.
