The study of the composition and arrangement of the neural system is known as neuroanatomy. Animals with bilateral symmetry have segregated, defined neural systems as opposed to animals with radial symmetry, whose nervous system is made up of a diffused network of cells. We now know more about their neuroanatomy. In vertebrates, the nervous system is divided into the pathways taken by the nerves that link to the rest of the body and the internal organisation of the brain and spinal cord (together referred to as the central nervous system, or CNS) (known as the peripheral nervous system, or PNS). In order to better understand how the nervous system functions, distinct structures and regions have been identified. For instance, a lot of what neuroscientists have discovered about how harm or "lesions" to specific brain areas affects behavior or other neural functions.
