Title: Autism & medical care
Abstract:
Her abstract will be about autistic individuals in hospital & how they respond to medical care. The topics that she will be discussing in her presentation are: Dealing with medical staff Blood Tests & XRays/CT scans Lights and sound issues, Being on a ward & Autism & TV Choices. Now most people hate being in a hospital let alone digest the news or information about our medical issues, but having to cope with the beep beeps of the monitors for the patients in an ED ward is overwhelming for the person with autism spectrum disorder. She also will be talking about her own experiences When she has been in a ward or hospital, she has been well looked after by the nursing staff. Most individuals would not cope with the noise, the lights/sounds/sensory overloads when it comes to being dealt with by medical staff.
Biography:
My name is Kerryn Burgoyne & I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at the age of 30. Prior to that, there was very little known about what is known today as autism spectrum disorder. Life was extremely difficult for me, as when I tried to gain successful employment for myself, it was difficult to do so especially when you were judged as an “outsider looking in” at others. In 2007, I started up my own business KTalk after writing my very first self-help life course book “The Goal”. There are also 5 more that are now for sale & have been developed to not only assist employers but for those individuals with mental health issues. I’m also an international/renowned/keynote/plenary autism speaker at major conferences globally, as well as being the author of 6 self help life course materials as products of my business which I’m so proud of.
