PM-POSHAN biomedicine: Advancing public health for a stronger and healthier world

Oral · Virtual · Day 3

Abstract

About this talk

Background: The PM POSHAN scheme bridges nutritional delivery and public health advancement by serving hot, cooked meals to over 11.8 crore schoolchildren in India, laying the foundation for a stronger, healthier global future. Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies remain critical barriers to holistic human development and immune resilience globally. Integrating large-scale nutritional interventions, Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN), with modern biomedical insights offers a transformative strategy to combat generational health burdens and improve public health outcomes. Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies remain critical obstacles to holistic child development and long-term public health. Integrating food systems with biomedical approaches—such as fortified staples and real-time nutritional tracking—maximizes the efficacy of school feeding programs.

Objective: This paper examines how the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) initiative leverages public policy, community infrastructure, and targeted dietary supplementation to combat hidden hunger and advance population-level health metrics as follows:
(i) Evaluate the intersection of school-level nutritional provisioning (hot cooked meals and food fortification) with biomedical disease-prevention frameworks.
(ii) Assess how targeted dietary macro- and micronutrients mitigate physiological vulnerabilities, such as iron-deficiency anaemia and cognitive stunting in children.
(iii) Propose a consolidated model in which public feeding programs act as a foundational layer for preventative healthcare and global health security.

Methods: It is analyzed national implementation data, caloric-protein adequacy norms (450–700 kcal per child daily), and the incorporation of bio-fortified food items across government-aided educational institutions. This study utilizes a cross-sectoral review of nutritional epidemiology, analyzing physiological markers of immunity, growth data from national health surveys, and the biochemical impact of food fortification (e.g., iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12) delivered through public nutrition initiatives.

Results: Findings indicate that synchronized school nutrition strategies reduce classroom hunger, improve attendance consistency, and lower anaemia and stunting indices among vulnerable cohorts as follows:
 (i) In nutritional efficacy , standardized caloric and protein delivery (such as primary and upper-primary norms of 450–700 kcal) measurably improves metabolic stability and cognitive engagement in youth.
(ii) In biomedical PM POSHAN, targeted micronutrient integration curbs the incidence of chronic anaemia and systemic inflammation, lowering susceptibility to infectious morbidities.
(iii) In socio-economic value, Institutional feeding acts as a social vaccine, dampening dropout rates while establishing steady biomedical baselines across vulnerable demographics.

Conclusion: Scaling nutrition-centric welfare frameworks through cross-sectoral biomedical integration offers a scalable model for developing nations striving for sustainable public health resilience, focusing on biomedical fortification or policy implementation. Bridging large-scale nutritional distribution (PM POSHAN) with evidence-based biomedicine creates a robust public health architecture. Scaling these integrated nutritional ecologies is vital to achieving sustainable development goals and building a resilient, healthier global population. It fulfils the 6th Edition of the International Public Health Conference (IPHC 2027), centring the theme “Advancing Public Health for a Stronger and Healthier World.” This global gathering aims to bring together experts, researchers, and professionals to exchange knowledge, address pressing public health challenges, and explore innovative solutions to improve population health worldwide, focusing on “PM-POSHAN BioMedicine, Advancing Public Health for a Stronger and Healthier World”.
