Title : Gender equality in health: A major issue for equitable access to sexual and reproductive health rights and services among adolescents (Cote d’Ivoire)

Abstract:

Gender equality in health remains a cornerstone for ensuring equitable access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) rights and services, particularly among adolescents. In West Africa, and specifically in Côte d’Ivoire, adolescents, especially girls, face multiple barriers to accessing comprehensive SRH information, services, and preventive care. These barriers have significant consequences on their health, education, and empowerment, reinforcing gender inequalities and hindering sustainable development. This presentation draws upon practical experiences in public health advocacy, school- and community-based sensitization campaigns, medical volunteer initiatives, and projects promoting sexual and reproductive health, including HIV/STI prevention, menstrual hygiene education, and breast cancer awareness. These interventions demonstrate the critical importance of gender-sensitive approaches to improve access to services and support adolescents in making informed health choices. The session will explore strategies and recommendations to strengthen gender equality within health systems in West Africa, enhance adolescent access to SRH services, and foster sustainable community engagement. It also aims to provide insights into how regional policies and programs can be adapted to promote the empowerment of young girls and boys, thereby contributing to global health and gender equality goals. This experience- sharing aligns with global efforts to promote health equity and is highly relevant for discussions at the IPHC 2026.
