Prevalence of sarcopenia in rural community-dwelling Mexican older adults

Title : Prevalence of sarcopenia in rural community-dwelling Mexican older adults

Abstract:

Introduction: Sarcopenia, defined as the loss of muscle mass, strength, and function, is a global health issue with significant implications for older adults, including increased disability and mortality. While its prevalence has been studied in urban settings, data from rural areas remain scarce. In Mexico, the aging population highlights the need for research on sarcopenia, especially in rural communities with limited healthcare access. This study examines the prevalence of sarcopenia in a rural Mexican population in Xochitepec, Morelos, aiming to inform targeted strategies for healthy aging.

Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 306 participants aged 60 and above was conducted in Xochitepec, Morelos, Mexico.  The survey included: demographics, chronic diseases, quality of life, nutritional status, mental status, dependence in activities of daily living, disability, physical measurements, health behaviors and other geriatric syndromes, like frailty and incontinence. Sarcopenia was defined using the SARC-F questionnaire. The instrument includes 5 components: Strength, Assistance in walking, Rising from a chair, Climbing stairs, and Falls.

Results: The median age of the participants was 62.6 years (SD 18.2), and 206 (67.3%) were women. Sarcopenia was identified in 79 individuals (25.8%), while 227 (74.2%) did not present this condition. The prevalence of sarcopenia was significantly higher in women (29.6%) compared to men (18%) (p < 0.05). Older age, female sex, and potential interactions with other geriatric syndromes, such as frailty and disability, were observed in those with sarcopenia. These results align with prevalence rates reported in similar studies across Asia, Europe, and North America, further reinforcing sarcopenia as a universal concern among older adults in rural and urban settings.

Conclusion: The prevalence of sarcopenia in this rural Mexican community highlights the need for targeted interventions to address this condition. In response, the municipality of Xochitepec has implemented over 14 initiatives, including cultural, artistic, sports, nutritional, and recreational activities, aimed at mitigating the impact of sarcopenia and promoting healthy aging among older adults. These findings underscore the importance of early prevention strategies, as sarcopenia is a global public health issue that can and should be addressed prior to the sixth decade of life.
