Title : Motivations, perceptions and experiences of traditional and alternative medicine-based infertility treatments in Ghana: A qualitative study

Abstract:

Aim: This qualitative study explores the increasing use of traditional and alternative medicine (TAM) for infertility treatment in Ghana. Understanding the motivations, experiences, and perceptions of women involved in TAM practices will provide crucial insights into their choices and the impact of TAM on their infertility treatment, potentially informing healthcare policies and improving support for women seeking alternative infertility solutions.

Methods: We used an exploratory qualitative design involving 15 participants, including TAM practitioners, faith-based healers, and users of TAM. The study’s data were collected using a comprehensive interview guide and analyzed thematically to uncover patterns and insights related to infertility treatment in Ghana.

Findings: We identified cultural beliefs, perceived effectiveness, and economic considerations as the primary motivators for using TAM remedies. These remedies were more accessible and affordable than modern medical treatments. There were diverse applications of TAM, including herbal medicine, prayer, and lifestyle changes. However, participants reported adverse effects and expressed concerns about the lack of regulation and oversight, highlighting the associated risks of using these remedies. Participants reported using TAM remedies alongside biomedical treatments without informing either TAM practitioners or biomedical practitioners, which could pose significant risks.

Conclusion: This study emphasizes the need for standardization and monitoring to ensure the safety and efficacy of TAM for infertility treatments in Ghana. It highlights the importance of intercultural health, fostering better communication and collaboration between traditional and orthodox practitioners. Additionally, it calls for increased education and awareness of potential side effects, ensuring that patients receive safe and effective treatment options for infertility.
