Title : Characterization of the gut microbiota in adults with coronary atherosclerosis

Abstract:

Background: As one of the leading causes of death and disability, cardiovascular disease is mostly caused by coronary atherosclerosis. And the gut microbiota probably plays an important role in coronary atherosclerosis. This study aims to investigate the microbiota profile in adults with coronary atherosclerosis so as to provide a theoretical basis for future research.

Methods: The fecal samples were collected from 35 adult patients diagnosed with coronary atherosclerosis and 32 healthy adults in Nanjing, China, and V3-V4 regions of 16S rDNA genes were sequenced by high-throughput sequencing. The differences in alpha diversity, beta diversity, and gut microbiota composition between the two groups were compared.

Results: A significant separation of adults with coronary atherosclerosis and controls was revealed by beta diversity analysis, and there was no statistical difference between the two groups in alpha diversity. Moreover, some differences in the composition of the gut microbiota existed between the two groups. The genera Megamonas, Streptococcus, Veillonella, Ruminococcus_torques_group, Prevotella_2, Tyzzerella_4 were identified as potential biomarkers for coronary atherosclerosis. The genera Bifidobacterium and Ruminococcus_1 were less abundant in the adults with coronary atherosclerosis.

Conclusion: There are some differences of gut microbiota between adults with coronary atherosclerosis and healthy adults and the insights from this study could be used to explore microbiota-based mechanism for coronary atherosclerosis.

Audience Take Away:

  • At genus classification level, the coronary atherosclerosis group exhibited a predominance of Megamonas, Streptococcus, Veillonella, Ruminococcus_torques_group, Prevotella_2, Tyzzerella_4.
  • At genus classification level, the abundance of Bifidobacterium and Ruminococcus_1 were significantly lower in adults with coronary atherosclerosis.
  • The authors demonstrated adults with coronary atherosclerosis have their unique characteristic gut microbiota, extending knowledge of the association between gut microbiota and coronary atherosclerosis.
